Dancing on the basketball courts of the West Side or in the streets of the shtetls of Eastern Europe, singing a police investigation in Hollywood or the woes of a single thirty-something in Manhattan, Broadway musicals tell the American myth.
Among the composers of this marriage between operetta and jazz are Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Michel Legrand and Stephen Sondheim. George Gershwin, a pioneer in bringing jazz and classical music together, sets the tone for the American musical.
Natalie Dessay and Neïma Naouri alternately portray Annie Oakley, the sharpshooter of the Wild West; Maria, the Puerto Rican heroine of West Side Story; and Daisy Gamble, a patient under hypnosis who falls in love with her psychiatrist.
They are accompanied by pianist, composer and arranger Yvan Cassar, who has been collaborating with artists on the French scene for nearly 20 years.
A family-friendly show where classical music, jazz and musical theatre meet.
A little more about the artistic team:
Initially drawn to theatre and film, Natalie Dessay embraced a lyrical career, performing roles such as the Queen of the Night and Lucia di Lammermoor. After two vocal cord operations in 2002 and 2004, she shifted her repertoire toward bel canto and more lyrical roles, while also developing a baroque facet in collaboration with Emmanuelle Haïm and William Christie. She left the operatic stage in 2013 and moved toward theatre and concert work, where she also explores song and jazz. Her discography includes, among others, Entre elle et lui with Michel Legrand (2013), Pictures of America (2016) and Between Yesterday and Tomorrow (2017).
On stage she will be joined by Neïma, Tom and Laurent Naouri. Together they create a dialogue between text and music.
Yvan Cassar is a composer, arranger, artistic director and conductor. His projects span a wide range of repertoire. He has served as musical director for Johnny Hallyday, Mylène Farmer and Céline Dion, and has also conducted international orchestras as well as classical music programmes for France Télévisions.
