Info
A popular phenomenon, Romeo & Juliet has drawn more than 11 million spectators worldwide. Translated into 18 languages and performed in 20 countries, the show has established itself as an international classic while retaining its status as a work of French musical theatre. Launched in 2001 at the Palais des Congrès, it attracted nearly 2.5 million spectators. From its inception, the duo Damien Sargue and Cécilia Cara have portrayed the title roles. Romeo & Juliet allows audiences to see its original duo back on stage. On May 14, 2028, at 1:00 p.m., the show will be presented at the Zénith de Lille.
For Cécilia Cara, returning with Romeo & Juliet has personal significance. "I was chosen at 15 to play Juliet, a founding role that marked the beginning of my life as an artist. Reclaiming it twenty years later, alongside Damien, was a powerful moment, as if we had never been apart but had been enriched by everything life has given us. This return has symbolic value: closing the circle, coming back to where it all began, with 25 years of experience that now nourish the characters in a different way. The story continues to bring people together, to convey love and emotion. It is a joy to reunite with Juliet and the French audience." Continuing, Damien Sargue adds: "This role has accompanied me since 2001, and rediscovering it today alongside Cécilia, with the perspective and maturity that time has given us, gives this adventure a new depth."
With more than 9 million records sold and songs that have become inseparable from French pop culture—such as "Les Rois du monde" and "Aimer"—Romeo & Juliet has left its mark on the history of musical theatre. For nearly 25 years, the show has traveled across cultures and adapted to the changes of its era: new technologies, new staging codes, new audience expectations. Faithful to its DNA while reinventing itself, it preserves what defines its identity: signature songs, a large-scale aesthetic, and a strong sense of stagecraft.
For Gérard Presgurvic, Romeo & Juliet remains a great love story. Universal and timeless, it poses a question that remains current: how far are we willing to go for love? Shakespeare answers it with a force that crosses the centuries, and it is that emotion we continue to share with the public. For the company, Romeo & Juliet is a long-running adventure, relaunched in 2027.
The return of Romeo & Juliet confirms that some stories endure through time. In 2027, Romeo & Juliet came back in a rethought version, incorporating new generational codes while preserving the essence that has made it successful for a quarter of a century: a timeless story, universal emotions, and a recognizable musical signature. This return is accompanied by a new cast, new costumes, and a new scenography, redesigned for today while preserving the show's DNA.
