On 2 November 2026, Fresku, together with the Metropole Orkest, will bring his Dutch-language rap to SPOT/De Oosterpoort in Groningen. Fresku, born in Eindhoven with roots in Curaçao, pairs humor and self-mockery with social commentary in his narrative tracks. From his breakthrough with online releases and videos with Teemong, he has built a repertoire around themes such as identity, fatherhood and the tension between public persona and private life. Albums like Fresku (2010), Maskerade (2012) and Nooit meer terug (2015) reveal his preference for calmer, atmospheric beats, elaborated storytelling and moments when he speaks plainly about what’s going on.
The Metropole Orkest, active since 1945 at the intersection of big band and symphonic music, adds a wide sonic palette in which the rhythm section and strings find common ground. Over the years the ensemble has worked with soloists from jazz, pop and soul and has developed original arrangements and themed programmes; with Snarky Puppy this collaboration resulted in the 2015 album Sylva. In Groningen they will set Fresku’s lyrics in arrangements that shift between sparse and full, leaving room for narrative detail and delivering a solid groove when needed.
