Info

Matt Berninger brings his low baritone and unforced storytelling to The Bronson in Ottawa on March 20, 2026. As the singer and lyricist of The National, he helped define a moody, melodic strain of indie rock, blending touches of folk and alternative rock with lyrics that orbit family ties, private tensions and daily urban drift. Beyond the band, he’s built a parallel path in collaboration and soundtrack work, then opened a fresh chapter with EL VY, his duo with Brent Knopf, and Return to the Moon in 2015, a turn toward more direct, pop-leaning writing. In 2020, Serpentine Prison marked his full entry into solo territory, favoring spare arrangements, soulful shadings and first-person narratives.

On stage, Berninger leans into that intimate writing, letting the baritone carry slow-burn ballads and late-night atmospheres while the band leaves space around them. The night focuses on his songwriter’s voice and the understated dynamics that run through his work, from hushed confessionals to gently surging indie rock.
