David Castello-Lopes « Délicieux »

David Castello-Lopes tackles a question that appears simple: what gives us pleasure? In Délicieux, he unfolds a 75-minute inquiry in which he examines our tiny joys and our less readily admitted satisfactions. A glass of chasselas by a lake in spring, a promotion that arrives out of the blue, the exact taste of a Gruyère eaten in Gruyères, or the strange satisfaction of knowing that in French the ‘z’ in Étivaz is silent and of correcting those who get it wrong: he lines up concrete situations, draws on our everyday reflexes, and dismantles our little logics.

With his eye for detail and sense of narrative, he mixes observation, digression and an almost pedagogical rigour to untangle the mechanics of pleasure, without moralizing or making a grand speech. The through-line rests on this deliberate mise en abyme: talking about pleasure in order to generate it, by the very unfolding of the show. Délicieux is an opportunity to recognize ourselves, to laugh at others as well as at ourselves, and to leave with a few fewer certainties and some very clear desires.
