Olivier de Benoist « Le droit au bonheur »

Olivier de Benoist presents Le droit au bonheur, a new one-man show in which he returns to his favourite playground: couples, children and the domestic life overflowing at the seams. With his feigned machismo and well-honed bad faith, ODB plays the exasperated husband and overwhelmed father who does his best to preserve his peace. He recounts how, to catch a breath, he tried everything: therapy, zen techniques, even exile to the countryside. Nothing works; he eventually identifies the source of his torment…and dreams of slipping away quietly — the classic “I’m just popping out to buy cigarettes” — inventing discreet strategies and unlikely escape plans.

With finely wrought writing, a keen sense of timing and an artful digression that lands perfectly, ODB moves from barbs to tender confessions as he dissects daily rituals, absurd arguments, flimsy authority and compromises that snap. A clear-eyed, funny portrait of family life, delivered with his deadpan elegance and that slightly roguish charm that hits the mark.
