Avenged Sevenfold, formed in 1999 in Huntington Beach, grew from the Orange County metalcore of Sounding the Seventh Trumpet and Waking the Fallen into a broader heavy metal and hard rock palette. Twin-guitar riffs, melodic lines and shifts between aggression and clarity define their approach, refined across albums like City of Evil, Avenged Sevenfold, Nightmare, The Stage and the exploratory Life Is but a Dream....
Good Charlotte, founded in 1996 around twins Joel and Benji Madden, sits at the crossroads of pop punk and alternative rock. Breaking through in the early 2000s with The Young and the Hopeless, the band later explored darker moods on The Chronicles of Life and Death and sleeker textures on Good Morning Revival. More recent releases, including Generation Rx, address mental health and social pressure with direct, melodic songwriting.
