Chubby Checker put dance at the heart of rock and roll at the turn of the 1960s. Born Ernest Evans and raised in Philadelphia, he signed to Cameo-Parkway and, in 1960, cut his version of The Twist, taking a simple step to global reach. He followed with Let’s Twist Again, Pony Time and a run of dance-led records that kept the tempo brisk, the refrains catchy and the structures clear so the crowd could join in. Between TV shows, dance films and steady touring, he shaped a live approach that fuses early rock, rhythm and blues and pop with a crisp backbeat.
