Kwame Akoto - Almighty God Art Works

Info

The exhibition revisits the career of Kwame Akoto, a major figure on the Ghanaian art scene, whose singular work combines popular painting with spiritual commitment.

A Ghanaian artist and pastor, Kwame Akoto stands out for his unusual trajectory. In 1972 he opened his studio in Kumasi, where he began as a sign painter, but he soon freed himself from commercial commissions to develop a personal world that mixes faith, social critique and humour. Rooted in local life, his work is also marked by a committed vision of the wider world.

Under the name Almighty God he is a preacher and a respected figure in his neighbourhood. In his studio, Almighty God Art Works, he creates striking images in which text plays an essential role. His works blend moralizing slogans, spiritual messages and everyday scenes in a direct, unambiguous style. The painter also frequently stages himself in self-portraits that question the creator’s status.

The exhibition pays tribute to this leading figure of contemporary West African art. It explores his recurring themes and highlights the influences, encounters—particularly with the artist Hervé Di Rosa—and convictions that have shaped his unique artistic approach.
