Tom Cochrane

Born in 1953 in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, and raised between Winnipeg and Ontario, Tom Cochrane emerged in the 1970s as a songwriter and guitarist on the Canadian rock scene. After a first solo album, he joined the band Red Rider at the end of the decade, which gradually evolved into Tom Cochrane & Red Rider, a lineup with which he developed a melodic rock sound tinged with heartland rock, pop rock, and folk. Throughout the 1980s, Cochrane toured North America with Red Rider and honed a writing style marked by narrative lyrics and straightforward guitar playing. The early 1990s ushered in a new phase with a more assertive solo career, propelled by the 1991 album “Mad Mad World,” which firmly established him in a space between radio rock, country influences, and more intimate ballads. Subsequent releases — from “Ragged Ass Road” (1995) and “Xray Sierra” (1999) to “No Stranger” (2006) and “Take It Home” (2015) — confirmed his focus on rock songwriting, studio craft, and the regular revisiting of his own catalog, as heard on “Songs of a Circling Spirit” (1997) and “Revisited” (2019). In this way, Tom Cochrane remains closely linked to the history of Canadian rock, alternating between band projects and a long-haul solo trajectory.
