Perfume Genius brings a duo set to Union Chapel in London on 27 October 2026. Under this moniker, Seattle-based songwriter Mike Hadreas has built a body of work that moves between indie pop, art pop and spare piano ballads. Starting with the stark intimacy of Learning (2010) and the follow-up Put Your Back N 2 It (2012), he pushed into sharper, more charged terrain on Too Bright (2014). No Shape (2017), co-produced with Blake Mills, widened the palette with detailed arrangements, while Set My Heart on Fire Immediately (2020) stretched from chamber pop to rock and ambient textures. Ugly Season (2022), composed for a project with choreographer Kate Wallich, connected his music to contemporary dance.
On stage in a duo, the songs are stripped to voice, keys and fine-tuned dynamics, bringing the writing to the foreground. The set can span early piano-led pieces and later, more expansive material, reframed with close harmonies and space. Themes of the body, queer identity and intimate relationships run through the lyrics, carried by melodies that shift from delicate to insistent. In the acoustic clarity of Union Chapel, these contours come through with detail, offering a focused reading of a catalogue that keeps evolving.
