The Handsome Family

The Handsome Family bring their gothic-tinged Americana to Union Chapel, London, on 24 May 2026. Formed in Chicago in 1993, the married duo of Brett and Rennie Sparks have built a songbook where folklore, gothic fiction and everyday strangeness meet. Brett’s low, resonant voice and plainspoken melodies carry Rennie’s narrative lyrics—stories of birds, deserts, missing persons and motel rooms—set to spare arrangements rooted in country, folk and bluegrass.

On stage they keep it close and unadorned, letting the writing lead and a dry humor slip between songs. The set draws across three decades, from early records Odessa and Milk and Scissors through Through the Trees, In the Air and Singing Bones, whose Far from Any Road later opened True Detective, and onward to Last Days of Wonder, Honey Moon, Wilderness, Unseen and Hollow (2023). A live show where detail and atmosphere guide the room, carried by two voices that have traveled a long road together.
