Info
Mavis Staples brings her gospel-born soul to Union Chapel, London, on 12 August 2026. Raised in the family group The Staple Singers, she forged a path that connects church harmonies, Memphis-leaning R&B and songs shaped by the civil rights movement. Her solo work spans collaborations with Prince and Bob Dylan through to a run of albums with Jeff Tweedy, carrying new writing and reimagined standards. On stage she draws from across that catalogue — hymns turned streetwise soul, freedom songs, blues shuffles and tender ballads — delivered with the grain of a voice that has deepened over the years. Her live set moves between uplift and groove, with a tight band keeping the pulse.
Opening is Lucca Mae, a London singer and songwriter whose repertoire leans into classic soul with touches of ska, pop and rock’n’roll. Known on the city’s circuit for warm, upfront vocals and melodic hooks, she brings concise, vintage-tinged songs shaped on small stages and residencies. Her set trades in crisp rhythms and a lived-in tone, setting the room before Mavis Staples takes over.
