Loyle Carner

A rapper and songwriter born in 1994 in South London, Loyle Carner—whose real name is Benjamin Gerard Coyle-Larner—has carved out a place on the British hip-hop scene by blending introspective rap, jazz-rap, and soul influences. He came to prominence in the mid-2010s with the EP “A Little Late” (2014), marked by deeply personal storytelling and a laid-back flow, before releasing his debut album “Yesterday’s Gone” in 2017, which firmly established him within the UK rap landscape. His writing—centered on family, intimacy, mental health, and questions of identity—rests on understated productions often built around jazz chords, warm textures, and supple rhythms. In 2019, Carner continued this aesthetic with “Not Waving, But Drowning,” broadening his world through collaborations with musicians from jazz, soul, and indie pop, then explored themes more directly tied to heritage, fatherhood, and social tensions on “Hugo” (2022).
