June grew up in a Jamaican family in southern Florida; her life was shaped by a close-knit extended family, community solidarity, and by the bass and harmonies. Her father, a carpenter and bass enthusiast, built his own speakers and maintained three sound systems spread across as many rooms. The bass from his solitary DJ sessions crept through the floorboards of June's bedroom, settling in like a stray cat as she listened to folk records, discovering harmonies that were new and precious to her. She discovered folk music on her own, somewhere between the soundtrack to The Sound of Music and Simon & Garfunkel's songs for The Graduate. It did not bother her to be the only one listening to folk; this solitude allowed her to fall in love with harmony above all, before the lyrics, before anything else.
Yet one elder had followed a similar path: her grandfather, Colin Smith, was a mento musician. He played the banjo and guitar, made his own rumba boxes, and strove to perpetuate the oldest form of rural acoustic folk music and Jamaica's oral tradition. Mento is the genre that gave rise to all this; it is from him that ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, and what followed originated, and it is he who put a guitar in June's hands. An inheritance, a gift, and a compass.
By layering the strands of these songs and this album, June discovers who she is in real time. We all carry within us, each day, a whole lineage of facets of our own personality, while also meeting those we will discover later. We reach out to these people while gesturing to them, not forgetting the lines of individuals who helped shape us and bring us to where we are. An assemblage of people and things that, on the surface, seem incompatible, yet we allow them into our lives nonetheless.
