Info
On April 18, 2027, Avishai Cohen returns to the stage at the Théâtre du Casino Barrière Deauville, with that distinctive blend in which the double bass leads the way. A composer and instrumentalist born in Jerusalem in 1970, he has forged a unique voice by making jazz converse with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern colorings, Latin rhythms, and more classical touches. After moving to New York in the early 1990s, his meeting with Chick Corea propelled him into the Origin project and then the New Trio, before he charted his path as a leader, beginning with Adama.
In concert, Cohen emphasizes both the exactitude of the writing and the space for improvisation. In trio format, his preferred territory rests on pulse, melodic motifs that spin and transform, and that sense of collectivity where piano, drums and bass continually respond to each other. Expect a set that travels between recent compositions and reimagined pieces, carried by a distinctly acoustic energy and a groove that won’t let go.
