Info
John Carroll Kirby is an artist from Los Angeles. Although his training is deeply rooted in jazz, his distinctive sound fuses diverse genres and styles. As a highly sought-after collaborator and producer, working with artists ranging from Solange, Frank Ocean and Harry Styles to independent musicians such as Connan Mockasin and Liv.e, among others, Kirby has recently focused on his own prolific solo work, releasing five albums with Stones Throw Records in just over two years.
"My Garden" (2020), for example, was highlighted by outlets such as Pitchfork, The Fader, LA Times, Q, and Mojo. That same year, Kirby released "Conflict," a soothing piano album conceived as a response to the chaos of that year. After composing the score for the animated film "Cryptozoo," his 2021 fusion jazz album, "Septet," marked a return to ensemble performance, while "Dance Ancestral" (2022), which featured additional production from Canadian artist YuSu, showed a more electronic-leaning approach.
More recently, Kirby received a Grammy nomination for his work on Steve Lacy's track "Bad Habit." In March 2023, Stones Throw released "Sundown," a long-running collaboration between Kirby and R&B singer Eddie Chacon. Kirby's new solo album, "Blowout," was released in June through Stones Throw.
