Info
David Byrne plays The Piece Hall in Halifax on 18 July 2026. Scottish-born and US-raised, he first made his name in late-70s New York as the singer, guitarist and principal writer of Talking Heads, tied to the new wave, art rock and post-punk scenes around CBGB. Since the early 90s he’s followed a solo path where experimental pop meets Afro‑Latin rhythms, funk and more intimate songwriting. With Brian Eno he created My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and later Everything That Happens Will Happen Today; with St. Vincent he co-signed Love This Giant. On stage and on record he shifts formats with ease, from orchestral pop on Grown Backwards to the direct lines of American Utopia, while also composing for film, dance and musical theatre.
Anna Calvi joins the bill. A London guitarist and singer, she writes at the crossroads of art rock, art pop and indie, with a deep, lyrical voice and a guitar front and centre. Her albums Anna Calvi (2011), One Breath (2013), Hunter (2018) and Hunted (2020) sculpt a music of tension and shadow with a cinematic edge. She has also composed for the opera The Sandman and the series Peaky Blinders. In 2014 she recorded the EP Strange Weather with David Byrne, a link that naturally connects to this date at The Piece Hall.
