On 1 August 2026, Cardiff Castle hosts a night rooted in UK punk and new wave with The Stranglers and The Undertones on the bill.
The Stranglers, formed in 1974 in Guildford, forged a sound that sits between raw energy and sleek melody: muscular basslines, sombre keyboards and sharp, concise writing. From early albums like Rattus Norvegicus, No More Heroes and Black and White to later staples such as Golden Brown or Always the Sun, their catalogue maps five decades of constant evolution without losing that tense, propulsive core. On stage, the band cuts straight to the essentials, stitching together punk-era cuts and noir-pop favourites with tight arrangements and a cold, precise groove.
From Derry, The Undertones bring the other face of that era: brisk, melodic songs built on tight riffs, ringing guitars and everyday stories. First revealed in 1979 with their self-titled debut, then Hypnotised, the group steered from punchy punk-pop towards richer textures before returning in the late 1990s, now fronted by Paul McLoone. Live, they keep it lean and immediate, lining up short, hook-heavy tracks that nod to their early singles while tapping into garage and power-pop currents.
