On 23 October 2026, O2 Academy Bristol hosts The Wonder Stuff and Inspiral Carpets, two long-standing names of UK alternative rock sharing the same stage.
Formed in 1986 in Stourbridge around Miles Hunt, The Wonder Stuff emerged from the English grebo scene before widening their palette. Their songs hinge on taut guitars, brisk tempos and unfussy pop hooks, later coloured by violin and banjo that brought folk and country shades. Across albums from The Eight Legged Groove Machine and Hup to 30 Goes Around the Sun and Better Being Lucky, the band has kept that balance of melodic edge and more acoustic textures, shaped by years on the road.
Born earlier in the decade in Oldham, Inspiral Carpets grew with the Madchester wave where garage grit and psych pop met indie immediacy. Clint Boon’s organ drives much of their sound, a swirl set against danceable rhythms and concise writing with a sixties tint. After the early EPs drew John Peel’s ear, the run of Life, The Beast Inside, Revenge of the Goldfish and Devil Hopping cemented their style; with Stephen Holt back on vocals since the 2010s, that organ-led pulse remains at the core.
