Info
Burning Spear plays the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver on 15 June 2026. From St Ann’s Bay, Winston Rodney has carried roots reggae and Rastafari spirituality since the late 60s. First a vocal trio, then a solo banner, Burning Spear shaped slow, mantra-like grooves, bass repetition, nyabinghi-inspired percussion and spare horns. The repertoire born around albums like Marcus Garvey, Man in the Hills or Social Living leans on history and everyday life, and on stage those songs often stretch into long, collective versions, guided by his incantatory phrasing and a steady, grounded pulse.
Alongside him, Jesse Royal brings the 2010s reggae revival with a blend of roots foundations, dub shades and dancehall inflections, a voice that moves between singing and toasting. His writing turns to social questions, Rastafari and Jamaican memory, carried by a supple groove with the bass up front and a production that links tradition and the present. Tracks from Lily of Da Valley and Royal map this path and sit naturally next to Burning Spear’s long-running songbook.
