City and Colour is the songwriting moniker he launched in the mid-2000s alongside his role in post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, a space where he’s long explored a quieter palette. Early records like Sometimes and Bring Me Your Love sketched out a folk and americana core built on close-mic’d vocals and unadorned guitars, before widening the frame on Little Hell and The Hurry and the Harm with shades of alternative rock, country and blues. If I Should Go Before You leaned into a full-band feel, while A Pill for Loneliness and The Love Still Held Me Near pushed toward denser, more atmospheric arrangements.
