Formed in late-70s Birmingham, the band took its name from the UK unemployment form and first made its mark with reggae rooted in everyday life. Early albums like Signing Off and Present Arms mixed dub accents and social themes. With Labour of Love in 1983, UB40 opened a parallel path with covers of 60s and 70s reggae, a direction that later sat alongside a more melodic, pop-leaning approach on records like Promises and Lies.

On stage, UB40 moves between originals and reworks with a steady groove: horns out front, mid-tempo skank, rolling basslines, and versions that stretch the tracks while keeping the pulse.
