Rough Trade East presents a Rough Trade Recommends curated by Space Afrika, celebrating the release of their new album Quiet Storm via Dais. The album will be on sale on the night. The band will be signing records after their DJ set.
Space Afrika, the Manchester/Berlin-based duo of Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang, make raw, detailed, visceral music with shades of ambient, trip-hop, techno, and modern classical, drawing spacious urban dubscapes from the contours of their city. Quiet Storm, the duo's new album, releases Friday 25 September on Dais Records and follows on from Honest Labour, which received critical acclaim and became one of the standout albums of 2021, topping Resident Advisor’s Album of the Year and earning Space Afrika two nominations for DJ Mag's Best Live Act and Best Album.
If 2021's Honest Labour defined Space Afrika's industrial-noir frameworks, Quiet Storm expands on their sound and scale as a sprawling, collaborative vision shaped with patience and intention, embedding their own coming-of-age story within a suite of cathartic abstraction.
Tony Njoku is a British-Nigerian composer, vocalist and electronic music producer known for creating emotionally resonant, genre-blurring music paired with visual work. He makes music rooted in electronic abstraction and cinematic composition, exploring sonic abstraction, raw emotion, and personal storytelling. He is also the architect of Conjuring, a live series that foregrounds improvisation, spiritual expression and community.
Lucy Havelock is a saxophonist, composer and improviser from Manchester, living in London. Her practice explores the physicality of sound, often through aesthetics of drone, microtonality and effects pedals. Her work is process driven and frequently involves close collaboration with other musicians and composers, alongside exploring embodiment and the limits of sound production using a breath-controlled instrument. She has presented work at CTM Festival (Radialsystem, Berlin) and performed at venues such as Cafe Oto and The Hundred Years Gallery.
