Info
Church Of Sound marks 10 years of DIY energy with a special night that ties their community to the living thread of British jazz. On 20 November 2026 at the Barbican Centre in London, the collective brings a programme mixing older material and new work, with the idea of looking back without getting stuck there: taking cues from the past while staying tuned to what’s happening right now.
The first set plays like a songbook dedicated to the so-called golden era of British jazz, 1965 to 1975. Expect a deep dive into the spirit of that period, when figures like Ian Carr, Stan Tracey, Mike Westbrook and Michael Garrick were shaping a sound that still resonates today. It’s less about nostalgia than about showing how those records laid the groundwork for what followed.
Alongside the Church Of Sound ensemble, the line-up features Oscar Jerome and Tamar Osborn, with jazz vocalist Norma Winstone bringing her distinct voice-as-instrument approach, somewhere between modern jazz, European improvisation and chamber-like writing.
