MØL (blackgaze):
In the small world of post-black metal, there exists a current teeming with gems, from Deafheaven to Agriculture, including Alcest. Under the name blackgaze, the style blends its swirling guitars and vocals that range from whispered to screamed into the dreamlike ambience of shoegaze. The Danish band's compositions, in the form of ethereal soundscapes and sharp riffs, create an emotional dynamic and a constant hope against a backdrop of unfathomable despair.
MØL draws inspiration from Schopenhauer's pessimistic vision, according to which the deep nature of the world resides in a blind, purposeless striving; the will has neither objective nor end, and the pursuit of individuals' satisfaction is doomed to fail. MØL regards that context — whether it is dreams or an embrace, two situations that can be imbued with love and joy as well as destruction or violence — is essential to deepen our understanding. The visual aesthetic, somewhat abstract and created by Daniel Owen in the style of Emil Nolde, reinforces this idea.
Their new album, Dreamcrush, offers rays of hope: the possibility of continuing to dream, despite ourselves.
