On June 12, 2027, Steve Vai and the Metropole Orkest will share the stage at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht for a meeting between virtuosic guitar rock and orchestral power. Steve Vai built his own language: progressive instrumental rock with sharp melodic lines, unexpected rhythms, and a sound that remains as technical as it is musical. From his early years as a transcriber and guitarist for Frank Zappa to stints with David Lee Roth and Whitesnake, and, of course, his solo albums, Vai's work has always centered on compositions that keep moving. Live, that translates into long arcs of tension, rapid phrasing, and passages where dynamics are as important as speed. The Metropole Orkest, formed in 1945 within the Dutch public broadcasting system, has for decades stood between big band and symphonic orchestra. With a solid rhythm section, rich strings, and a tradition of tailor-made arrangements, it is an ensemble that switches effortlessly between jazz, pop, and cinematic colors. Together with Vai, its repertoire gains an extra layer: larger, more detailed, and with room for both finesse and impact.
