Mary Coughlan is an Irish vocalist associated with jazz. She blends husky tones with the laconic wit of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. She draws on blues traditions back to Bessie Smith, with the sardonic, bittersweet defiance and despair of Edith Piaf. She delivers it in an Irish drawl: sceptical, rueful, mournful and ardent for love.
Over 40 years she has made personal music on both sides of the Atlantic about what goes on between men and women.
