Info

On May 1, 2026 The Billy Cobham Quintet will perform at PHIL in Haarlem. Drummer and composer Billy Cobham was born in Panama, grew up in New York, and honed his playing in school orchestras and army bands before entering the jazz scene in the late 1960s. Via Horace Silver and George Benson he became involved in the electric sessions around Miles Davis and later joined John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, where jazz, rock and Indian influences converged.

With solo albums such as Spectrum (1973) and Crosswinds (1974), Cobham charted a course defined by crisp snare accents, complex time signatures, and a blend of funk, rock and modern jazz. In a quintet setting, that translates live into long grooves, precise breaks and ample space for interplay and improvisation. The set draws on his classic repertoire as well as newer pieces, with a focus on timing, pulse and texture. The five-piece band constructs layered themes and moves smoothly between drive and nuance, with the drums as the propulsive engine.
