Info
On 18 September 2026 Mary Coughlan performs at PHIL, Haarlem. The Galway-born singer has been carving out her own path between jazz, blues, folk and chanson since the mid-1980s. Her debut, Tired and Emotional (1985), marked the start with a low, storytelling voice and spare accompaniment; albums such as Under the Influence, Uncertain Pleasures and Sentimental Killer followed and helped to build a wide repertoire.
Live, Coughlan often works with compact arrangements that verge on cabaret and folk—an approach she has developed for years with Dutch musician and producer Erik Visser. For this anniversary tour she draws on jazz standards, melancholic ballads, French chansons and works by Irish songwriters. The emphasis is on lyrics, phrasing and the rhythm of the story, with room for silence and detail. Forty years of songs gathered into a single set, carried by a voice that tells.
