The Unthanks

Nati nel nord‑est dell’Inghilterra attorno alle sorelle Rachel Unthank e Becky Unthank, The Unthanks si inseriscono in una tradizione folk inglese fortemente legata alla Northumbria, ma la interpretano con un linguaggio che attinge anche alla musica da camera, ai brass band e alla canzone contemporanea. Fondato nel 2004 con il nome Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, il gruppo ha pubblicato prima Cruel Sister nel 2005 e poi The Bairns nel 2007, per assumere il nome attuale nel 2009 con Here’s the Tender Coming. Insieme ad Adrian McNally, che è anche arrangiatore e produttore del gruppo, la formazione ha affinato un suono basato sulle armonie vocali, tempi contenuti e un lavoro accurato sulle texture, fra repertorio tradizionale, composizioni originali e cover reinventate. The Unthanks ha inoltre sviluppato diversi progetti paralleli, fra cui The Songs of Robert Wyatt and Antony & The Johnsons (2011), Songs from the Shipyards (2012) e The Songs and Poems of Molly Drake (2017). Nel corso degli anni si sono esibiti sia su palchi folk sia in sale concertistiche più trasversali, fino ai Proms, componendo anche per lo schermo, in particolare per Worzel Gummidge. Tra i loro album più significativi figurano Last (2011), Mount the Air (2015), Lines (2019), Sorrows Away (2022) e In Winter (2024).
