Info

Welcome to celebrate Military Music Day at Sibelius Hall in Lahti. The concert is a tribute to our culture and to military music, which unites a dignified tradition and patriotism. The concert honors the long Finnish history of military music, whose roots extend about 500 years back to a time when we were still part of the Kingdom of Sweden. In this concert, the program also intertwines with our national literary heritage. Eino Leino's poems, with their interpretations, are deeply embedded in Finnish identity. The ceremonial march for the homeland is a Toivo Kuula composition that weaves together the concert's theme. Kuula's works and his musical language remind us of what the land and our culture have defended and built for. The concert's soloist is baritone Olli-Tapio Tikkanen. The melancholic interpretations provide a counterpoint to the martial drive of the traditional marches. The Guard Band's festive concert offers a dignified and entertaining evening of music. The concert's conductors are the Defense Forces' Chief Conductor, Music Commander Timo Kotilainen, and the Guard Band's Chief Conductor, Music Major Jaakko Nurila. The concert lasts approximately two hours, including an intermission.
