Info
On 31 October 2026 in Leeds, John Cooper Clarke brings his unmistakable brand of stage poetry to City Varieties Music Hall: words fired off at speed, razor-sharp and spoken like music. Coming out of late-70s Britain alongside the punk scene, he made performance poetry feel as immediate as a gig, built on tight rhythm, deadpan humour and social satire, often delivered a cappella with that clipped, percussive flow.
Expect a set that leans into the classics from records like Disguise in Love, Snap, Crackle & Bop or Zip Style Method, where punchlines and observations land with the precision of a hook. Clarke’s influence has long stretched beyond poetry rooms into indie culture too, with lines that still circulate in rock circles, including the text later reworked as I Wanna Be Yours. This Leeds date is a chance to hear the voice behind it all, live and up close.
