Info
On 7 March 2027 Angélique Kidjo will appear with the Metropole Orkest at SPOT/De Oosterpoort in Groningen. At the center is her repertoire, rooted in Benin and open to soul, pop and Afro‑Latin, translated into a broad orchestral sound. Not a massive symphonic wall, but arrangements that breathe: space for percussion and groove, brass that sharpens riffs, strings that color melodic lines, and Kidjo’s voice that effortlessly switches between Fon, Yoruba, French and English.
Kidjo grew up between theatre and traditional singing, moved to Paris in the 1980s and developed a distinctive sound in which West African polyrhythms meet clear pop structures. From early albums to later projects around Talking Heads or a homage to Celia Cruz: the tension between rhythm, call‑and‑response and song form consistently lies at the heart of her set. Live she seeks direct interaction with the ensemble and with the audience, with songs that move and linger.
The Metropole Orkest, operating at the intersection of jazz, pop and film music, is experienced in crossovers and bespoke arrangements. Thanks to a rhythm section akin to a big band and a large string palette, the orchestra can switch smoothly between pulse and color. In Groningen it will lock into Kidjo’s grooves and open up her songs into a wider sonic picture, where detail, dynamics and ensemble playing take precedence.
