City Pop Waves presents Masayoshi Takanaka at Crystal Palace Bowl, London, on 7 August 2026. The Tokyo guitarist came up in the early 70s on Japan’s rock and fusion scene, with flowing melodies set over jazz‑rock rhythms, Brazilian sway and tropical pop. A set built around summer‑tinged instrumentals and travel motifs, from Blue Lagoon and Brasilian Skies to The Rainbow Goblins, with the guitar at the center.
Ginger Root is Cameron Lew’s indie soul and city pop project: bass‑led grooves, soft keys, tight guitars and direct melodies, shaped by 70s/80s Japanese pop and American DIY soul. On stage, the trio format keeps the sound lean and focused.
Junko Yagami brings piano‑led city pop with orchestral shades. Emerging in the late 70s, she mixes pop melody, soul inflection and Latin color; songs like Mizuiro no Ame and Purple Town anchor her repertoire.
Himiko Kikuchi (菊池ひみこ) traces a line through jazz fusion and melodic instrumental pop, folding funk, Latin accents and early synth textures into crisp piano work. Active since the 80s, she draws on big‑band and studio experience.
