Info

Tinariwen return with their lean, magnetic take on desert blues at Electric Bristol in Bristol on 24 May 2026. Formed in the Sahara and rooted in Tuareg culture, the group calls their sound assuf, a word in Tamasheq that carries shades of longing, distance and the pull of wide-open spaces. Their story is marked by exile and movement: former fighters who traded weapons for guitars, they turned lived experience into songs about freedom, loss and the need to keep going.

On stage, Tinariwen build slow-burning grooves from interlaced guitars, hand percussion and voices that are rough around the edges and deeply melodic. Repeating riffs circle and tighten, basslines settle into a dusty stride, and the chants and harmonies slide between melancholy and uplift without forcing either mood. It’s music that breathes, drawing on traditions while staying resolutely electric.

Over the last two decades, the collective has carried this language of rhythm and repetition across borders, letting the music speak plainly through texture and pulse. In concert, the effect is communal rather than showy: long forms, patient dynamics, a steady trance that invites listeners into the cadence of the desert night.
