The Handsome Family

The Handsome Family play Brudenell Social Club in Leeds on 18 May 2026, bringing their dark-tinged take on Americana to the stage. Partners in life and songwriting for over three decades, Brett and Rennie Sparks keep a clear split: Brett composes the music, Rennie writes the words. Their newest songs grew from a jolt in the dead of night during the pandemic, a dream-fragment that cracked open a chorus and set a tone of quiet unease. Their work has travelled widely, covered by Jeff Tweedy, Andrew Bird and Phoebe Bridgers, and Far From Any Road reached a global audience as the opening theme of True Detective’s first season.

Live, they deal in understated melodies and low-lit twang, grounding their stories in familiar places before they drift sideways. The settings are bus depots, overpasses and recirculating-air terminals; the cast moves from Custer and Tesla to a flying milkman and the hush of an air conditioner against a plastic tree. It’s narrative songwriting with a foot in folklore and the American everyday, where the ordinary blurs into the uncanny without raising its voice.
