Info

Salford-born poet John Cooper Clarke brings his quick, razor-edged verse to Bristol Beacon, Bristol, on 11 October 2026. A fixture of the late-70s punk moment, he turned spoken word into a gig: tight rhythms, black humour and social snapshots delivered at speed. On stage he blends staples and newer pieces, rattling through punchlines and internal rhymes, often a cappella, sometimes leaning into the musical cadence that shaped his records. Expect nods to Beasley Street and Evidently Chickentown, the intimate twist of I Wanna Be Yours, and the barbed asides that keep his readings sharp. Between poems, the deadpan patter lands like stand-up, part memoir and part street report, carried by a Mancunian lilt. Decades on, Clarke threads satire, love notes and everyday grit into compact, memorable bursts, proving how performance poetry can hit with the urgency of a band while staying rooted in voice, rhythm and a precise sense of timing.
