The Dead South

On 31 August 2026 at York Barbican in York, The Dead South roll in with their distinct blend of bluegrass, folk and Americana. Formed in Regina, Saskatchewan, the quartet of Nate Hilts, Scott Pringle, Colton Crawford and Danny Kenyon tucks banjo, mandolin, guitar and cello into lean arrangements built on close harmonies and brisk, percussive grooves. Their live set swings between narrative ballads and breakneck picking, mixing dark humor and plainspoken storytelling with a steady back-porch pulse.

The show draws on the songbook that put them on the map, from the widely known In Hell I’ll Be in Good Company to cuts across Good Company, Illusion & Doubt, Sugar & Joy and Chains & Stakes. On stage, the band keeps it tight and unadorned: four players, four voices, sharp timing, and that push-and-pull where each instrument snaps into place or slips into a drone when the story needs space. It’s roots music with grit and a modern edge, carried by melodies that stick and rhythms that don’t let up.
