Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab for Cutie will play TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht on 29 September 2026. Since 1997, the band centered around singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard has been developing its own indie idiom: melodic guitars, subtle keyboards, tight rhythms and lyrics with an eye for detail. What began as Gibbard’s solo project quickly grew into a full-fledged group that included bassist Nick Harmer and longtime guitarist/producer Chris Walla, who helped shape the studio sound until 2014.

After a lo-fi start with the debut Something About Airplanes (1998), the band refined its songwriting on We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes (2000) and The Photo Album (2001). Transatlanticism (2003) brought broader compositions, followed by Plans (2005) and Narrow Stairs (2008), which raised the bar further, later supplemented by Codes and Keys (2011). After Walla’s departure the trajectory continued with Kintsugi (2015), Thank You for Today (2018) and Asphalt Meadows (2022). Live, the band moves smoothly through that catalogue, with Gibbard’s clear voice up front and arrangements that let the songs speak plainly and without ornament. In Utrecht that entire journey comes together, from early indie gems to recent work.
