Mercury Rev

On 19 October 2026, Mercury Rev will play at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. The Buffalo collective began in the late 1980s at the margins of noise and indie rock, before shifting their songwriting toward dreamy, orchestral pop. Around singer Jonathan Donahue and guitarist Grasshopper, the band developed a signature sound of high, fragile vocals, shimmering guitar layers and string and brass hues that often feel cinematic. Yerself Is Steam and Boces capture the rawer early years; See You on the Other Side marks the turning point, while Deserter’s Songs and All Is Dream find the balance between folk, psychedelia and expansive arrangements. Their long-standing partnership with producer and former member David Fridmann is audible in the layered productions and the attention to detail. Live, Mercury Rev regularly reworks its repertoire: intimate ballads, electronics and richer textures take on new shapes, with string parts rendered on keyboards or samples and a rhythm section that leaves ample breathing space. The Utrecht set draws from both early and later material, with room for The Secret Migration, Snowflake Midnight, The Light in You and their Bobbie Gentry project, The Delta Sweete Revisited. Melody, texture and Donahue’s timbre are central, supported by Grasshopper’s precise guitar lines.
