The Gathering will celebrate on January 16, 2027 at AFAS Live (Amsterdam) two records that have definitively set their course: Mandylion and Nighttime Birds. The band from Oss began in the late 1980s in the doom and atmospheric metal corner, but in the mid-1990s found its own language in which heavy guitars, open spaces and melody come together.
With Mandylion The Gathering made in 1995 a leap to a broader, alternative audience: layered riffs, ominous passages and a more song-oriented approach that sounds at once dreamy and direct. Nighttime Birds builds on that with more dynamism and contrast, sometimes darker, sometimes almost buoyant, but always with that recognizable tension between power and nuance.
Live that mix comes best to life: not a tight genre exercise, but a set that breathes, rubs against boundaries and moves with the moment. An evening for those who love atmospheric rock/metal with room for detail, silence and crescendos.
