Garmonbozia presents: Magma.
Around the drummer, singer and composer Christian Vander, Magma takes shape in Paris in 1969, initially with bassist Francis Moze, in a singular crossing between progressive rock, jazz fusion, choral music and repetitive writing. Magma develops very early a universe of its own, structured by ostinato bass lines, cyclical rhythms, voices often treated in a collective manner and the use of the kobaïan, an invented language that accompanies a mythology devised by Vander. The first albums, Magma (1970) and 1001° Centigrades (1971), establish this aesthetic before Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh (1973), then Köhntarkösz (1974), Üdü Wüdü (1976) and Attahk (1978), which show variable balances between rock tension, jazz improvisation and vocal work.
Over the years, Magma has functioned as a collective with a variable geometry, with musicians who have come through the French jazz-rock and progressive scenes, including Klaus Blasquiz, Stella Vander, Jannick Top or Bernard Paganotti. After a first period that ended in the 1980s, Magma resumed activity at the end of the 1990s and notably published K.A (2004), Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré (2009), Félicité Thösz (2012) and Zëss (2019), extending a repertoire where writing occupies a central place, on stage as in the studio.
