Burning Spear, also known as Winston Rodney, takes the stage with a roots reggae steeped in Rasta spirituality and Jamaican narratives. Hailing from Saint Ann’s Bay, he has shaped a recognisable style: an incantatory vocal phrasing, slow tempos, repetitive basslines, percussion drawn from nyabinghi rhythms and spare brass. On Tuesday 7 July 2026 at FIDUCIAL Astéria in Décines-Charpieu, he presents a repertoire that spans several decades, without resorting to gimmicks, relying instead on the strength of grooves and harmonies.
On stage, Burning Spear stretches his songs into long, collective versions where motifs answer one another and settle in. Thematic concerns remain at the heart of the set: Marcus Garvey, African history, memory and everyday life in Jamaica. Cornerstones like “Marcus Garvey,” “Man in the Hills” and “Social Living” form the backbone, joined by more recent tracks such as those from “Jah Is Real.” Between call-and-response, basslines that hold the place together and measured bursts of brass, the concert favours a quiet tension and patient progression, true to an aesthetic that prizes endurance and attentive listening.
