AFI plays Commodore Ballroom, 868 Granville Street, Vancouver, on April 19, 2026. Formed in the early 1990s in Ukiah, the band — Davey Havok, Adam Carson, Hunter Burgan, Jade Puget — first came up through hardcore and skate punk before shifting toward darker, more melodic ground at the turn of the 2000s. Black Sails in the Sunset and The Art of Drowning set the tone for a sound that balances urgency with choral parts and atmosphere, refined on Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground. Later releases like The Blood Album and Bodies fold in a new wave sensibility while keeping a sharp guitar-bass-drums core. On stage, AFI leans into call-and-response vocals, tight rhythms and a setlist that spans their different eras.
Also on the bill, Choir Boy from Salt Lake City, the project led by Adam Klopp. Their synth-pop draws on dream pop, soft-focus new wave and a touch of goth, with clean guitars, bright keys and a vibrating vocal line that foregrounds introspective writing. From the debut Passive With Desire to Gathering Swans, the band sketches songs that carry nostalgia without losing clarity, fitting neatly between 80s-inflected pop textures and a contemporary, intimate approach.
