Info
On May 12, 2027, Fred Wesley brings Fred Wesley & The New J.B.’s to Cambridge Junction in Cambridge for a night built on the hardest grooves of 70s funk. A key architect of the James Brown sound, Wesley shaped that dry, razor-sharp brass language and the locked-in swing that made the J.B.’s a powerhouse: punchy horn lines, basslines that don’t let go, and rhythms designed for the floor.
This show taps into the band’s classic run and the tracks that turned their name into a reference point, from Pass the Peas and Gimme Some More to Breakin’ Bread and the chart-topping Doing It to Death. It also shines a light on A Blow for Me, a Toot to You, the 1977 album Wesley co-produced with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, a bridge between James Brown discipline and the wider P-Funk universe. Expect tight arrangements, deep pocket, and plenty of space for that trombone to lead the conversation.
