On November 18, 2026, Surprise Chef will perform at Théâtre Fairmount in Montréal, delivering its instrumental funk that is at once restrained and highly cinematic. Formed in the suburbs of Melbourne, the quintet has carved out a signature at the intersection of soul, jazz-funk, and 1970s film music, with a slow-groove sensibility that lets space and silences breathe.
On stage, their pieces unfold in nuance: tight arrangements, keyboards and rhythm guitar that converse with each other, flute lines surfacing without forcing, and a rhythm section that sustains the tension without ever overdoing it. From All News Is Good News and Daylight Savings to Education & Recreation, their writing has grown more precise while preserving that taste for narrative textures, somewhere between a studio jam and an imaginary soundtrack. Opening the evening, Ben Hackett takes the stage.
