Info
Transatlantic folk band The Magpies are becoming a notable act on the contemporary roots scene. Their harmonies, musicianship and songwriting draw together Anglo and American traditions, weaving Celtic folk, bluegrass and Appalachian influences into a modern sound.
Founding members Bella Gaffney (singer-songwriter, guitarist and banjoist) and Holly Brandon (fiddle player and tunesmith) perform alongside singer-songwriter and guitarist Ellie Gowers and clawhammer banjo player Kate Griffin. Together, they craft a brand of transatlantic folk with a strong thread of feminism and gender equality running through their music.
Following their debut album in 2020, The Magpies released their second album Undertow in 2022, a showcase of intricate harmonies, instrumentation and storytelling. Their 2026 EP The One Thing That I Know continues this approach.
On stage, The Magpies are known for energetic performances and wry delivery, with ethereal voices and detailed instrumentals. They have toured across the UK, with festival appearances including Glastonbury, Cambridge, Larmer Tree, Shambala, Towersey and Deer Shed, and have performed internationally in the USA, Canada, Ireland, Portugal and Luxembourg.
They are also the creators and hosts of Magpies Festival, set in the parkland of York’s Sutton Park Stately Home, an event focused on inclusivity in the music industry.
