"Birding" is the debut release by the London-based dream-pop band deary, released on April 3 via Bella Union, with 11 tracks that range from explosive shoegaze riffs to delicate shades of ethereal indie, and it marks the moment when the band found its own sonic identity.
When the dream-pop trio formed by Ben Easton (guitar), Dottie Cockram (vocals and guitar), and Harry Catchpole (drums) chose "Birding" as its title, they were not only thinking of an homage to birds, but also of the sense of openness, wonder, and freedom that their music aims to convey. The title also draws attention to the impact humans have on the world around them, both on nature and on themselves.
The deary (strictly in lowercase) were born during the lockdown, when Ben left the southeast London music scene to devote himself to more emotive and introspective writing. In 2021 a mutual friend introduced Dottie to him, and the two instantly clicked, aided by their shared love for Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, and My Bloody Valentine. Dottie recalls that the first name they spoke of was Elizabeth Fraser, the enigmatic voice of Cocteau Twins. Although comparisons to that band were not scarce, due to Dottie's ethereal voice, Ben's layered and reverberated guitars, and Harry's powerful drums, the deary developed a personal style capable of blending diverse influences without losing their identity.
