Joan Wasser, aka Joan As Police Woman, brings her shape-shifting songwriting to Komedia Brighton on 21 February 2027. As a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, she builds songs where soul, indie pop, and a touch of jazz sit naturally side by side, carried by warm vocals and a feel for space as much as groove. Across a decade-spanning run of records, she’s moved between spare, intimate arrangements and fuller, more expansive soul, without ever settling into one lane.
Her live shows pull from that whole spectrum: slow-burning ballads, hushed R&B rhythms, and sharper, more direct tracks, all delivered with the kind of precision you’d expect from a classically trained musician who never lost her indie-rock instincts. A committed collaborator as well, Wasser has shared stages and studios with artists like Iggy Pop, Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, Tony Allen, Lou Reed, Anohni, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rufus Wainwright, John Cale, and David Byrne, and that open, dialog-driven energy runs through her set.
